Philosophy of Music Education
Kelly Marie Willard
I wish for my students to have a positive musical experience in a safe, open, and non-threatening environment. Students will use music as an outlet for developing essential skills such as respect, cooperation, discipline, responsibility, flexibility, patience, integrity, compassion, and initiative. With these skills, students will learn to value teamwork and gain the ability to work with people from all walks of life by overcoming differences and emphasizing similarities.
I wish for my students to be able to experience music in many forms including, but not limited to, playing instruments, singing songs and choral pieces, listening to live and recorded music, dancing and other types of movement, composition of others and their own, and attendance at and performance in concerts, musicals, etc. Through these experiences, my students will develop confidence in themselves as young people and as musical artists, and create lasting memories of an enjoyable educational experience that will carry on throughout their lifetime.
I wish for my students to develop skills that will enable them to correctly identify rhythmic meters, key signatures, note and rest values, and dynamic markings. Students will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to sight-read music both melodically and rhythmically, feel the pulse/beat in a piece of music, and anticipate the musical direction in a work. These skills will allow my students to build the foundation of good musicianship that will assist them throughout their musical career.
I wish for my students to gain knowledge involving historical periods and their musical characteristics and developments, world music, musical forms, and instrument identification by sight and sound. This knowledge will be the foundation to develop an overall understanding of music and its purpose. As a result my students will be expected to answer the specific questions of who, what, when, where, and most importantly why.
.I wish for my students to embrace the music of many different world cultures, including Latin, Caribbean, African, Tribal, Asian, and Middle Eastern, and respect the many different musical styles, including Jazz, Rock, Choral, Folk, Country, Ragtime, and Classical. As a result, my students will be able to appreciate the purpose and value of the music to each particular culture, composer, and the people of the period. and be able to better understand their own personal interests and musical endeavors.
I wish for my students to approach all music with an open mind, believe that music is fun and worthwhile, realize that music requires hard work, and understand that learning music is a lifelong process in order to evoke personal growth that can be applied to all facets of life.
Overall, as a result of the above expectations, I wish for my students to grow to be individuals who:
